DMK, AIADMK leaders set to join BJP later this month

A number of leaders and party workers of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) are set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by the end of August, according to a report in The Economic Times.

The induction of these leaders and cadre into the BJP will happen during BJP President Amit Shah's visit to the state.

The list of leaders includes AIADMK's Nainar Nagendran, the former industries minister,  who belongs to the politically powerful Thevar community.

Shah, who is on a 110-day tour of the country with an eye on the 2019 General Elections, is scheduled to visit Tamil Nadu for three days between August 22 and 24. He will attend party meetings in Chennai and Coimbatore.

According to key party leaders, Shah wants an overhaul of the party machinery in the state and wants the BJP to be more visible.

Meanwhile, according to media reports, the two warring factions of the AIADMK are closing in on a merger. It was also reported that leaders of factions were in contact with BJP leaders at the Centre, fuelling speculations of a unified AIADMK joining the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The death of chief minister J Jayalalithaa in December 2016 left a vacuum in the state's politics. The split in the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) since then has given the BJP a window to make inroads into the southern state's political hierarchy.
