Equity funds closed with negative returns as markets erased all previous day's gains on Friday due to profit booking while the NSE Nifty closed tad below the 5300 level amid a lacklustre trade. All equity and balanced funds decline, sector funds too slumped under the market pressure registering no gainers.

Investors opted for profit taking ahead of the weekend as they are cautious ahead of Reliance Industries' Q4 earnings, which will be announced today after market hours. Trading mistake hammered the NSE benchmark which touched an intraday low of 5245, before closing down 41.55 points or 0.78% at 5,290.85.

The BSE benchmark shed more than 250 points to hit an intraday low of 17,231.34, before closing the session at 17,373.84, down 129.87 points or 0.74%. The Index had rallied more than 400 points in previous four sessions.

On the debt front, Short term category delivered good performance with very few declines while Long term category funds ended on a mixed note with the advance: decline ratio of 40:36 and 12: 35 for Long term funds and Gilt long term funds.
