Tata Asset buys banking, oil, pharma; sells telecom

Tata Asset Management increased its weightage in banking & financial services, oil & gas and pharmaceuticals space, while it reduced its weightage in telecommunication, utilities and cement & construction space.

Allahabad Bank, Firstsource Solutions and GMR Infrastructure were the top buys, while Idea Cellular, Nagarjuna Construction and GVK Power & Infrastructure were the top sells.

A study of Tata Asset Management portfolio for the month of September 2009 showed that in the banking & financial services sector, it bought SBI, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and introduced IDBI Bank, SREI Infrastructure Finance. But it exited Indian Bank and sold Power Finance Corporation, Rural Electrification Corporation. (View - All Bulk Deals by Mutual Funds)

In the oil & gas space, it bought HPCL, IOC, Reliance Industries and introduced Oil India, while it sold ONGC, Gujarat State Petronet and Shiv Vani Oil & Gas.

It purchased Cadila Healthcare, Lupin, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals and introduced Pfizer in the pharmaceuticals pack. However, it sold Piramal Healthcare, Divis Laboratories and Cipla. (Check out - Which sectors are attracting Fund Managers?)

The seling was seen in the telecommunication segment, where it sold Reliance Communications, Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and bought Sterlite Technologies.

It sold NTPC, Tata Power Company and GVK Power & Infrastructure in the utilities space. However, it introduced NHPC, Gujarat Industries Power and purchased.

In the cement & construction space, it sold ACC, Nagarjuna Construction and Madhucon Projects, while it bought Jaiprakash Associates, IVRCL Infrastructure and Projects and Simplex Infrastsructures.
