BSE 500 index companies have seen an average deliverable volume percent in the range of 100-5% in the week between April 2-11. Out of the 500 companies, 319 companies have given an average deliverable volume percent of 50% and up.
And the maximum number of companies that have made it to this list are mid- sized companies indicating that they are showing some strength after a period of hibernation.
Around 240 midcap companies have given an average delivery-based volume percent in the range of 50-100%. Out of these 240 companies, 137 companies have given an average deliverable volume percent of 70% and more.
The data seems to suggest that in investors have preferred to park their money in midcap companies rather than the frontliners which are normally liked in times of volatility and choppiness.
Atlas Copco(I), Kansai Nerolac , Gati , Balkrishna Inds , Shopper's Stop , KSB Pumps , EMCO are companies that have given an average deliverable volume % of 90% and up. Excluding Gati, the total average volume of the above-mentioned companies are relatively low. Gati traded with an average total volume of 25809 shares and out of that average delivery-based volume was 23226 shares.

Midcaps may have finally woken up from its slumber. In the week between 2-11 April, BSE midcap index has outperformed the Sensex. BSE midcap has given a return of 5.90% while the sensex gave a return of 5.84%.
Infact, insurance companies like ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company is set to launch a Flexi-fund, in which the allocation will be higher to midcaps and smallcaps.
Puneet Nanda, CIO at ICICI Prudential LIC said, "There would be much higher allocation to midcaps and smallcaps; it is not as if it is a midcap or smallcap fund, but a flexicap fund and so the fund managers will have the opportunity to invest across sectors depending on their moves. But the allocation to midcap and smallcap is going to be much higher."
According to Ambareesh Baliga, Karvy Stock Broking, institutional interest in the midcaps is actually pushing the index up.
He said, "You won't see much of an interest from the HNIs or retail. In fact, these people are stuck at higher levels and they are looking at a way out."
But he feels that the rally in the index is short lived. "Another 100-200 points more or another 5-6% and after that you could see these stocks coming down from those levels."
