How have sectors performed in 2006?

Even though this year has seen the Sensex making a journey from 10k to 14k levels, but when it comes to indices performance, it says a different story.

Out of the 10 indices( excluding midcap, smallcap indexes which were launched in April 2005 and the Sensex) six indices gave a weaker performance in 2006 as compared to 2005. In 2005, indexes like auto had beefed up by 46.84%, capital goods by 92.73%, consumer durable by 108.97%, FMCG by 54.8%, IT by 41.01%, PSU by 19.73%, while in 2006 the above-mentioned indexes gained by 28.36%,55.31%, 4.77%, 18.31%, 39.69%, 11.2% respectively. The analysis shows that indexes performed better last calendar year as compared to this year even when the Sensex gained by 5%. For instance, Hindustan Motor's stock price fell three times in 2006. In 2006, it gained by 9.03% while in 2005, the stock had beefed up by 31.3%. 

The sectoral performance in 2006 indicates the same story. The leading stocks of majority of sectors seemed to had beefed  up more in 2005 as compared to this year.

In the auto sector, leaders like Hero Honda, M&M, Hindustan Motors, Bajaj Auto witnessed more growth in 2005 than in 2006. Hero Honda's stock price beefed up by 43.19% in 2005, while in 2006 the stock price fell by 11.42%. M&M gained by 83.81% in 2005 and in 2006 it gained by 73.15%. Bajaj Auto also seems to be riding in the same boat. In 2005, the stock price grew by 75.07% and in 2006 by 31.79%.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Consumer durables, capital goods, FMCG are the other sectors whose performance lagged in 2006 vis-a-vis 2005.

In the consumer durable sector, the performance of all the companies that comprises the index faltered in 2006. Companies like Videocon Industries, Blue Star, Rajesh Exports, gave a percentage gain of 4.99%, 71.59%, 126.12% respectively. But in 2005, the above-mentioned companies had given double the gain of 108.26%, 93.06%, 168.66% respectively.Titan Industries gained by 320.6% in 2005 and in 2006 the stock price fell by 1.63%.
