Foreign Institutional Investors, FIIs, seem to have contradicted their own behaviour in the quarter ending June. The first quarter of this fiscal had seen FIIs reducing their shareholding in 82 of the 118 BSE-500 companies, but if the entire universe of listed companies are taken, then the number of FIIs who have increased their FII limit in the quarter ending June vis-à-vis March quarter, are more than the number who have reduced their stake.

Out of the total 4490 listed companies, FIIs have increased their stake in 188 companies, while in 177 companies FII stake has fallen.
Market experts like Deven Choksey, KR Choksey Sec and Sumit Rohra, Antique Stock Broking suggest that portfolios are seeing a churn. FIIs have made into known names and the trend is emerging towards quality.
Rohra said, “There is a churn going on in portfolios. After the entire fall they (FIIs) are adding on to the stocks in which they are convinced and exiting the ones in which they are not comfortable. After this fall (fall which was witnessed in May) every fund manager is buying more of his own stocks. For example, suppose HSBC is holding a 5% in Hinduja TMT and is bullish on the stock at Rs 750 or 800, he will add on to it more rather than getting into something new. Every fund is buying more stocks which they already have as they are at attractive valuations.”
Surprisingly the companies in which FIIs have increased the maximum stake are mostly midcap companies. Midcap companies like Stride Acrolab, Astra Microwave, Alok Industries, Anant Raj Inds, Era Construction have seen an increase in FII stake in the range of 11.14-38.4%.
While on the other hand, large caps like Union Bank, Canara Bank, HDFC, PNB,NTPC, and midcaps like Maharashtra Seamless, Sakthi Sugars, KEC Infrastructure, Aftek Infosys, have lost FII stake in the above-mentioned period.
There are also some largecaps which have been favored by the FIIs. These are Nagarjuna Construction, Reliance Capital, Mahindra& Mahindra, Ranbaxy Labs, Dabur India, Nestle India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Colgate Palmolive and etc.
