Sensex has suffered more in comparison to the midcaps in the period between February 12 and March 15. Markets started falling from February 12, when markets were at 14190.70 levels. In the above-mentioned period midcaps fell by 9.28%, while
Sensex fell by 11.60%.
If we compare the beta of the midcap index with the stocks it constitutes then one can get an idea about the stocks that have been volatile or which have been trading stable in this period. This further will give one cue about stocks that can be looked at as buying opportunities going forward.
Beta is a measure of the volatility, or systematic risk, of a security or a portfolio in comparison to the market as a whole. You can think of beta as the tendency of a security's returns to respond to swings in the market.
As many as 135 companies out the total 250 midcap companies have a beta of more than 1 indicating their high volatility. A beta of 1 indicates that the security's price will move with the market. A beta less than 1 means that the security will be less volatile than the market. A beta greater than 1 indicates that the security's price will be more volatile than the market.
For example, in the same period, ING Vysya Bank's stock price fell by 9.29% and the midcap index by 9.28%. This suggests that the stock has been more volatile than the index itself.
Other stocks like, Bharati Ship yard fell by 9.66%, AIA Engineering by 11%, SpiceJet by 11.76%, Indraprashtha Gas by 11.92%, Allcargo Global by 12.42%, Divi's Lab by 12.53%, Godrej Industries by 12.58%, Gateway Distripark by 13.64%, MRF by 14.40%, Hinduja TMT by 15.45%, Polaris Software by 16.02%, Hotel Leela by 16.93%, Titan Industries by 17.10%, Deccan Aviation by 20.42%, Bata Ind ia by 28.43%, GMR industries by 44.59% etc, indicating the volatility of these stocks.
