Sensex volatile; broader indices outperform

At 11:34 hours IST, buying in telecom, power, metal, auto and realty stocks was helping the Sensex to stay on the higher side. ICICI Bank, Infosys and ITC were the other gainers. However, selling continued in ONGC, Wipro, HDFC Bank, Sterlite Industries, BPCL, TCS, GAIL, Axis Bank, Jaiprakash Associates, Ambuja Cements, Sun Pharma, ACC and HUL, which capped the gains to major extent.

Hindustan Copper, Rashtriya Chemical, NMDC, Jai Corp, Dredging Corporation, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel and Tata Steel were the most active shares on the bourses.

The 30-share BSE Sensex was trading at 17,528, up 42 points and the Nifty was at 5,236, up 10 points. The broader indices were outperforming the benchmark indices; the BSE Midcap Index was up 0.7% and the Smallcap was up 1%, as about 863 shares advanced while 388 shares declined on the NSE.

Bharti Airtel shot up 3.17% in the telecom space. Reliance Communications, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices and Tata Communications gained 0.5-1.5%.

In the power space, Siemens rose 3.33%. NTPC, Neyveli Lignite, NHPC, Power Grid Corp, Reliance Power and ABB were up 1-1.5%.

Tata Steel, SAIL, Hindalco and Jindal Steel rallied 1-1.7% in the metal pack.

Top percentage gainers - Vikas WSP and Action Financial were up nearly 20%. Hind Rectifiers, Cera Sanitary, Marsons, Dynamatic Tech, Jai Corp and Visa Steel gained 10.6-17%.

In the midcap space, Havells India, Redington, GNFC and Gammon India moved up 4.5-8.4% while MindTree was down 5.6% and HMT down 3.92%. OnMobile Global, Dishman Pharma and HT Media were down 1.7-2.2%.

In the smallcap space, Shristi Infra and Mount Everest rallied 13-15%. However, Richa Industries, OCL Iron, JK Lakshmi Cement, Elantas Beck and Int Conveyor lost 3-5%.
