Sensex, Nifty plunge 6% in January series

The Sensex and the Nifty plunged 6% each in the January series. Realty, capital goods, banking and metal stocks witnessed huge selling pressure; respective indices declined 6-11.5%. 

The BSE Realty Index was down 11.5%; Indiabulls Real tanked 22% and HDIL lost 14%. DLF and Unitech fell 11% each.

L&T and Punj Lloyd slipped over 13% in the capital goods space.

The BSE Bankex lost 6.4%; IOB, HDFC and ICICI Bank fell 10-15%.

Sesa Goa, Sterlite Industries and JSPL were down 10-13% in the metal space; respective Index was down 6.3%.

Among the other stocks; Orchid Chemical and Suzlon plunged 18%. Praj Industries was down 15%.

Ranbaxy Labs, Maruti and Aban Offshore fell 11-13%.

However, Pantaloon Retail, JP Hydro, Triveni and Sun TV gained 12%. Grasim and Siemens were up 6%.

Among the broader indices, the CNX Midcap Index was down 4% and the BSE Small Cap Index was down 2%.
