Nifty holds 5450 amid volatility; auto, realty, FMCG gain

Nifty holds 5450 amid volatility; auto, realty, FMCG gain

The benchmark Sensex was trading flat with a positive bias while the Nifty managed to hold the 5,450 level. Metal, Auto, FMCG, realty, healthcare and power companies' shares along with HDFC, Bharti Airtel, Wipro and L&T were supporting the markets.

Even major Asian markets were quite supportive; Shanghai was up 0.14%, Hang Seng was up 0.56% and Taiwan gained 0.2%. However, Nikkei was down 0.3% and Straits Times declined 0.6%.

However, the sell-off in Reliance Industries, ONGC, TCS, Infosys, Kotak Mahindra, Ambuja Cements, SBI and PNB capped the gains to some extent.

The Sensex was trading at 18211, up 38 points and the Nifty was at 5462, up 15 points. The Nifty August Future was trading at 2.5 points premium. The broader indices were outperforming the benchmark indices; both the indices gained 0.9% each.

Top gainers - Tata Motors was trading at Rs 882.40, up 2.49%; Power Grid Corp was at Rs 100.75, up 1.97%; Unitech was at Rs 86, up 1.78%; M&M was at Rs 654.95, up 1.50%; HDFC was at Rs 3,063.70, up 1.15%; ITC was at Rs 157.40, up 0.96% and L&T was at Rs 1,824.90, up 0.83%.

Reliance Industries, Hathway Cable, Tide Water Oil, Tata Motors, Essar Shipping and SBI were the most active shares on the exchanges.

In the midcap space, Hathway Cable and Den Networks shot up 12% each. KGN Industries, Monsanto India and Dish TV India gained 7-8%. However, Indiabulls Financial, Marico, Manappuram, Kirloskar Brothers and Thomas Cook lost 1.3-2.6%.

In the smallcap space, REI Six Ten, Modern India, Asahi India, Maharashtra Scooters and Hinduja Venture went up 6-11%. However, Well Pack Paper, Subhkam Capital, Borosil Glass, Andrew Yule and Halonix slipped 3-5%.

About 2045 shares advanced while 1162 shares declined on BSE. Nearly 161 shares were unchanged.
