Nifty hovers around 5486; Hero Honda, Rel Infra, HUL up At 15 hours IST - the 50-share NSE Nifty continued to trade in a tight range of 5480-5500 on Friday, despite some strength in European markets, which were trading 0.3-0.6% higher. Nifty has been in a range of 5400-5500 since previous month. ONGC, Bharti, Infosys, SBI, HUL, M&M, Reliance Infrastructure, NTPC, HDFC Bank, Reliance Communications, Cipla, Ranbaxy Labs along with realty companies' shares were supporting the markets. On the other side, metal companies' shares along with Reliance Industries, ITC, TCS, Wipro, BHEL, Tata Power, Tata Motors, Maruti, Sun Pharma and ICICI Bank were putting pressure. The Sensex was trading at 18233, down 4.4 points and the Nifty was at 5483, down 2.65 points. However, the broader indices were strong; gained one percent each. Top gainers - Unitech, Hero Honda, Ranbaxy Labs, Reliance Infra, Kotak Mahindra, Bharti Airtel, HUL and ONGC were up 1-3%. Top losers - Suzlon Energy, Jindal Steel, Hindalco, Jaiprakash Associates, BPCL, Hindalco, Reliance Industries and Sterlite Industries lost 1-2%. Top percentage gainers - Vesuvius India, Oscar Invest, Fortis Malar, Xpro India, Birla Ericsson, Astral Poly and Kiri Dyes Chemical gained 12-16%. About 1888 shares advanced while 1331 shares declined on BSE. Nearly 165 shares were unchanged. Sensex quiet; Suzlon, JP Asso, JSPL, BPCL, Wipro slip At 14:14 hours IST - the benchmark Sensex was quiet in trade due to lack of global cues. It was consolidating around previous closing value since the beginning of trade on Friday. The Nifty has been making attempts to hold 5500 mark again and again. Even European markets and US index futures were flat in trade. The Sensex was trading at 18249, up 11 points and the Nifty was at 5485, down 0.3 point. However, the broader indices were strong; the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices gained 0.9-1%. Top gainers - Unitech was trading at Rs 81.30, up 3.30%; Hero Honda was at Rs 1,739.85, up 2.60%; Ranbaxy Labs was at Rs 513.50, up 1.88%; Bharti Airtel was at Rs 339.70, up 1.68%; M&M was at Rs 636.70, up 1.67%; ONGC was at Rs 1,337, up 1.10% and Reliance Infra was at Rs 1,024.85, up 1.05%. Top losers - Suzlon Energy was trading at Rs 50.35, down 1.85%; Jaiprakash Associates was at Rs 112.75, down 1.66%; Jindal Steel was at Rs 688, down 1.52%; BPCL was at Rs 767.30, down 1.5%; Sterlite Industries was at Rs 158.55, down 1.31%; Tata Steel was at Rs 537.80, down 1.04% and Wipro was at Rs 399.50, down 0.98%. Top gainers on the BSE Midcap - MVL and Nirma surged 12-12.8%. BEML, KEC International and Bajaj Finserv rallied 6.6-8%. Top losers on the BSE Midcap - Rajesh Exports, Peninsula Land, State Bank of Mysore, Jet Airways and Infotech Enterprise fell 2.6-4.4%. Top gainers on the BSE Smallcap - Oscar Investment, Goodyear, Kiri Dyes Chemical, Vesuvius India and ZF Steering Gea gained 10.5-13.9%. Top losers on the BSE Smallcap - Graviss Hosp, AGC Networks, Subhkam Capital, REI Six Ten and Vikas WSP slipped 3.7-5%. About 1880 shares advanced while 1338 shares declined on BSE. Nearly 166 shares were unchanged. Nifty lacklustre; Unitech, Hero Honda, Bharti, M&M surge At 13.08 hrs IST, the Nifty was trading flat. It was a quiet session for the markets as largecaps failed to gain momentum on the either side ahead of weekend. European markets too opened in green with marginal gains. The Sensex was down 7.46 points or 0.04% at 18230.85, and the Nifty was down 10.20 points or 0.19% at 5475.95. About 1766 shares advanced, 1236 shares declined, and 382 shares remain unchanged. Buying was seen in realty, auto, telecom and pharma stocks. Metal, oil&gas and banking stocks witnessed some selling pressure. In the largecap space, Unitech, Hero Honda, Bharti Airtel, Mahindra and Mahindra and Ranbaxy Labs were up 1.5-2.5%. On the losing side, Suzlon Energy, Jindal Steel, BPCL, Jaiprakash Associates and Hindalco were down 1.3-2%. Piramal Healthcare, Midfield Industries, Suzlon Energy, Jindal PolyFilm, Prakash Steelage, Reliance Industries, Infosys and Mahindra Satyam were the most active shares on exchanges. In the midcap space, Nirma and MVL shot up 12%. Bajaj Finserv, Manappuram and Wockhardt were up 4.9-6.7%. However, KGN Industries, Infotech Enterprise, Peninsula Land, State Bank of Mysore and Rajesh Exports lost 2-4%. In the smallcap space, Kiri Dyes Chemical, Goodyear, Ador Welding, Vesuvius India and Visa Steel gained 10.7-12.4% while AGC Networks, Marg, REI Six Ten, Ganesh Housing and Vikas WSP fell 3-5.6%. Nifty trades in tight range; breadth positive At 11:47 hours IST - the 50-share NSE Nifty was trading in a narrow range of 5480-5500 since early trade. It has consistently been trying to get above 5500 mark. Realty and healthcare companies' shares along with ONGC, Infosys, Hero Honda, Bharti Airtel, M&M, NTPC, HUL and HDFC were helping the markets. Dharmesh Mehta, Head-Broking of ENAM Securities said investors were waiting for 5-10% kind of correction in India before making fresh investments. "The FIIs have been investing selectively," he added. Going forward, he believed, the markets may see more inflows from domestic institutional investors (DIIs) in the second half of fiscal year 2010. On the other side, Reliance Industries, ITC, Wipro, BHEL, ICICI Bank along with metal companies' shares were witnessing selling pressure. The Sensex was trading at 18246, up 8 points and the Nifty was at 5486, up 0.20 point. The broader indices were outperforming benchmarks; were up 0.8% each. About 847 shares advanced while 416 shares declined on NSE. Piramal Healthcare, Suzlon Energy (bagged 30 MW order from Altrade Group), Prakash Steelage, Jindal PolyFilm (ahead of board meet on bonus & fund raising), Midfield Industries, Reliance Industries, Mahindra Satyam, Infosys and Unitech were the most active shares on exchanges. Top gainers on the BSE Midcap - Nirma rallied 13.66%; Manappuram, MVL, Bajaj Finserv and Trent (Reliance Capital increased stake to 8.6% in company via rights subscription) gained 5-7%. Top losers on the BSE Midcap - Peninsula Land, State Bank of Mysore, Indian Metals, Jet Airways and Mahindra Holiday lost 2-2.6%. Top gainers on the BSE Smallcap - Goodyear, Ador Welding, Shristi Infra, Kiri Dyes Chemical and Brandhouse were up 8.5-11.5%. Top losers on the BSE Smallcap - Ganesh Housing, AGC Networks, Vikas WSP, Swan Mills and REI Six Ten fell 2.7-4.7%. Sensex flat; RIL, ITC, JSPL, Suzlon, PNB, Tata Steel down At 10:26 hours IST - the benchmark Sensex was hovering around previous closing value and was trying to stay in a positive terrain. Even Asian markets were mixed in trade as they were eyeing US non-farm payrolls data today. For the Nifty, 5500 was acting as a strong resistence level for last few days. Rajan Malik, Director-PCG Advisory at Anand Rathi Financial Services says, the markets still continue to be facing that tough wall at 5,550-5,600 as of now. "Unfortunately this band seems to be reducing by the day, we had a 500-600 points band on the Nifty which has now become almost 200 points; 5,350-5,400 on the downside and 5,550-5,600 on the upside. The market does not seem to be in a mood to be going anywhere as of now," he said. The Sensex was trading at 18256, up 18 points and the Nifty was at 5487, up 1.4 points. The broader indices continued to outperform benchmarks; the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices gained 0.8% each. Top gainers - Unitech was trading at Rs 80.85, up 2.73%; M&M was at Rs 639.60, up 2.13%; Hero Honda was at Rs 1,730.15, up 2.03%; Infosys was at Rs 2,798.50, up 1.65%; ONGC was at Rs 1,341.30, up 1.51% and Bharti Airtel was at Rs 336.95, up 0.87%. Top losers - Suzlon Energy was trading at Rs 50.10, down 2.34%; Axis Bank was at Rs 1,372, down 1.16%; Jindal Steel was at Rs 691.50, down 1.02%; ITC was at Rs 163.85, down 0.97%; PNB was at Rs 1,201.45, down 0.91%; Jaiprakash Associates was at Rs 113.60, down 0.96%; Reliance Industries was at Rs 928.70, down 0.9% and Tata Steel was at Rs 540.30, down 0.58%. Piramal Healthcare, Prakash Steelage, Suzlon Energy, Jindal PolyFilm, Hindustan Copper, Reliance Industries, Unitech and Mahindra Satyam were the most active shares on exchanges. In the midcap space, Nirma rose 13.3%. MVL, Bajaj Finserv, Zydus Wellness and Shriram City gained 5-6.7% while State Bank of Mysore, Peninsula Land, KGN Industries, Kwality Dairy and Indian Metals lost 1.3-2.7%. In the smallcap space, Shristi Infra, Goodyear, Venkys, Brandhouse and Zenith Infotech rallied 7-10% while Bhansali Eng, Parenteral Drug, Marathon Nextgen, India Securities and AGC Networks fell 2.4-3.7%. About 2137 shares advanced while 1076 shares declined on BSE. Nearly 171 shares were unchanged. Asian markets like Nikkei and Taiwan were up 0.5% & 1.4%, respectively. Kospi rose 0.2% while Shanghai lost 0.5% and Straits Times went down 0.16%. Nifty consolidates around 5500; Infy, Bharti, Sterlite up The benchmark Nifty started the day on a flat note with a positive bias following US cues, which went up 0.5-1% ahead of jobless data today. The Index has been facing resistance at 5500 level. Among the frontliners, Unitech, Hero Honda, Infosys, Sterlite Industries, TCS, Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, SAIL, ONGC, Tata Steel, M&M and Cipla were witnessing buying interest. At 9:01 hours IST, the Sensex was trading at 18291, up 53 points and the Nifty was at 5495, up 10 points. The CNX Midcap rose 0.43% at 8899; about 928 shares advanced while 213 shares declined on NSE. However, Suzlon Energy (down 5.5% on huge volumes), HDFC Bank, ITC, DLF, HCL Tech and GAIL were losers in early trade. Midcap & Smallcap space: Ashok Leyland rallied 2% as August total bus & truck sales stood at 7,480 units as against 4,784 units in August 2009. Lupin was up 1.5% as the company has received USFDA permission to seek nod for Lipitor Generic. Ceat was up 1% and CESC up 2%. Rana Sugars, Dwarikesh Suguar, Simbhaoli Sugars and KCP were up 3-5%. Subros rose 6.5%. Reliance Broadcast rose another 3.5% at Rs 120. Mahindra Satyam went up 2% and Chambal Fertiliser up 1.3%. Nelco surged 6.5%, Venkys was up 4.6% and Birla Ericssion rallied 13%. Mercator Lines was up 1.7% and HMT up 1.4%. Petronet LNG was up 1% and Adani Power up 1.5%. Global cues: Asian markets were trading flat. Shanghai, Hang Seng, Straits Times and Kospi were flat in trade. Nikkei was up 0.4% and Taiwan up 1.1%. The US markets saw marginal gains ahead of monthly non-farm payrolls report today (Economists are expecting to see a loss of 110,000 jobs in August, an improvement over July's 131,000 job loss). The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 51 points at 10320. The Nasdaq Composite was up 23 points at 2200 and S&P 500 was up 10 points at 1090.
