Mkts end flat amid volatility; midcap, smallcap outperform

Markets slip further in late trade

The markets have slipped further in late trade on account of unwinding seen in the midcap and small cap counters. IT, metals, and capital good stocks are trading weak, but FMCG, consumer durables and oil & gas space are still in lime light.   

At 3 pm, the Sensex is down 103.97 points or 0.53% at 19680.92, and the Nifty down 21.00 points or 0.36% at 5891.10. About 2034 shares have advanced, 966 shares declined, and 65 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Nifty are ITC at Rs 202.70 up 6.99%, HPCL at Rs 320.15 up 6.82% and BPCL Rs 448.55 up 5.21%. 

Top losers on the Nifty are Hindalco at Rs 209.80 down 2.53%, Ranbaxy Labs at Rs 413.80 down 2.45% and Zee Entertain at Rs 311.40 down 2.14%. 

Some of the most active stocks on the bourses are Essar Oil, Reliance petroelum, Reliance, MRPL.

BSE IT index was trading in deep red. Most losers in the It space were Infosys at 1,625 down 1.70%, Patni Computer at 311.15 down 0.89% and Satyam at 425.20 down 0.85% and HCL Tech at 295.90 down 0.35%. 

Oil & gas counter has been buzzing since morning today. Gainers in this sector were Essar Oil, HPCL, IOC and  BPCL.

Mkts still flat amid volatility; smallcaps outperform

The markets are trading flat amid volatility since opening today. The frontline indices are trading flat but the broader markets continue to buzz on sustained buying interest. The Indian markets are resilient and outperformance can be seen as compared to Asian peers. Asian markets have ended in red with deep cut led by Hang Seng followed by Jakarta and Taiwan markets.

Volume in the first half of trade has been good with impressive breadth on NSE. Over 905 stocks were on the advancing side and nearly 300 stocks were on the down side on NSE. IT, metals and banking stocks were lagging today, however, FMCG, consumer durables and oil & gas space were buzzing today.    

At 1:45 pm, the Sensex is down 50.33 points or 0.25% at 19734.56, and the Nifty up 0.40 points or 0.01% at 5912.50. About 2168 shares have advanced, 832 shares declined, and 65 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Sensex are ITC at Rs 202.05 up 6.54%, Grasim at Rs 3,755 up 3.76% and Dr Reddys Labs at Rs 611 up 1.83%. 

Top losers on the Sensex are Ranbaxy Labs at Rs 411.10 down 2.96%, Satyam at Rs 422 down 1.6% and Tata Steel at Rs 847 down 1.58%. 

Some of the most active stocks on the bourses are Essar Oil, Reliance petroelum, Reliance, MRPL.

ITC was trading at Rs 202.05 up 6.54%, Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 201.70 up 0.88%, Reliance was trading at Rs 2,897.90 up 0.91%, Infosys was trading at Rs 1,629.95 down 1.4% and HPCL was trading at Rs 323.20 up 7.79%.  

Consumer durables stocks were trading strong today. Videocon, Titan Inds were strong.

Market trades flat: HPCL, BPCL, ITC top gainers

The frontline indices are trading flat but the broader markets continue to buzz on sustained buying interest. The Indian markets are resilient and outperformance can be seen as compared to Asian peers. Asia is trading with deep cuts with Hang Seng  down 4% followed by Nikkie down 2%.

BSE Midcap index is up 1.7% and smallcap up 1.8%. This has given markets an excellent breadth of 4:1 i.e. four advances for evey decline on NSE.

At 12.39 pm, the Sensex is down 33.60 points or 0.17% at 19751.29, and the Nifty up 15.80 points or 0.27% at 5927.90. About 2193 shares have advanced, 806 shares declined, and 66 shares are unchanged.

Lloyd Steel, KEC Infrastructure, Hind Motors, Alok Textiles are some of the midcap gainers. Popular refinery stocks are trading higher. Bongaigaon Refinery, MRPL, Chennai Petroleum, IOC, HPCL, BPCL are among the gainers. Chennai Petroleun up over 7%.

Frenzy in Essar pack stocks continues with Essar Oil up 20%, Essar Steel is up 19%. FMCG, realty, oil & gas and power sector indices are trading in green. Select metal, Banks, telecom and pharma stocks are witnessing selling pressure.

ITC, Reliance Energy, NTPC and Bharti Airtel are the top gainers on Sensex. On the Nifty HPCL is up over 7%, BPCL is up over 4.5%, Reliance Petro up over 2.5%. Satyam, Ranbaxy, HDFC, Sun Pharma, HDFC Bank are among the major frontline laggards.

Market off day's low: Midcaps, smallcaps outperform

The markets have shown resilience and are trading flat outperforming rest of the Asia. Midcaps and smallcaps continue to party and are trading with good gains. Asia is trading with deep cuts with Hang Seng  down 4% followed by Nikkie down 2%.

At 10.51 hrs IST, the Sensex was down 38.39 points or 0.19% at 19746.50, and the Nifty up 10.10 points or 0.17% at 5922.20.

About 2106 shares have advanced, 875 shares declined, and 84 shares are unchanged.

BSE Midcap index is up 1.7% and smallcap up 1.8%. This has given markets an excellent breadth of 4:1 i.e four advances for evey decline.

Popular refinery stocks are trading higher. Bongaigaon Refinery, MRPL, Chennai Petroleum, IOC, HPCL, BPCL are among the gainers. Chennai Petroleun up over 7%.

Market opens with gap down on weak global cues

A sell off continued in the markets for second straight session, it has opened with more than 100 points gap down as global markets are still in downtrend on profit booking. Metal, Banks, telecom and pharma stocks are witnessing selling pressure.

Reliance Industries, Reliance Comm, Tata Steel, Ranbaxy Labs, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and SAIL are trading lower.  

However, Wipro, ITC and Ambuja Cements have gained in the morning trade.

At 9:55 am, the Sensex was down 181 points at 19,603 and the Nifty down 61.57 points at 5,850.50.

Asian markets tumbled today. Hong Kong's Hang Seng plunged  3.17% or 911.31 points at 27,839.90. Japan's Nikkei slipped 1.6% or 245.62 points at 15,150.68. Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted fell 1.9% or 169.62 points at 8,735.79. Singapore's Straits Times declined 1.58% or 54.80 points at 3,422.79. South Korea's Seoul Composite tumbled 2.42% or 47.04 points at 1,900.70.

There was a selloff in the USD markets as inflation concerns ruling the day; the Dow fell 120 points, Nasdaq dropped 26 points.
