Markets ended flat after a fairly volatile session. However the bankex has outperformed the broad markets and other sectoral indices; it gained nearly 3%.
The Sensex closed up 43.87 points or 0.33% at 13469.37, and the Nifty up 10.40 points or 0.27% at 3876.3.

About 999 shares have advanced, 1492 shares declined, and 63 shares are unchanged.
SBI, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Bharti Airtel, MTNL, PNB and Oriental Bank were the top gainers on the indices.
HLL, Reliance Energy, Dr Reddys Labs, Reliance, IPCL, Zee and Dabur India were the top losers on the indices.
The BSE Midcap Index was down 0.11% or 6.32 points at 5,594.08. The BSE Small Cap Index was down 0.33% or 21.66 points at 6,501.62.
The BSE Bankex surged 2.86% or 196.21 points at 7,060.23. Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra, PNB, Bank of Baroda and SBI gained.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 0.23% or 20.50 points at 8,813.53. Aban Offshore , Thermax, Crompton Greave, Ingersoll Rand, SKF India fell.
The BSE FMCG Index was down 0.25% or 5.13 points at 2,042.58. Shaw Wallace, HLL, Dabur India, United Spirits and Nestle closed in negative.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index was down 0.81% or 50.60 points at 6,217.06. Reliance Natural, Reliance, Chennai Petro and GAIL slipped.
The BSE Auto, metal, Health Care and IT indices were closed flat.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8755.17 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 25545.55 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 5092.2 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 39392.92 crore.
