Markets close flat: Metal, power stocks drag

The markets closed flat due to lack of buying interest in scrips. The Sensex closed at 11,706.85 up 17.07 points or 0.15%. The Nifty gained 4.65 points or 0.14% to close at 3430.35.

About 1043 shares advanced, 1445 shares declined, and 72 shares were unchanged.


The BSE Small Cap Index lost 0.4% or 21 points to close at 5,849.60.

The BSE Midcap Index closed flat at 4,840.76.

Metal and power stocks were among the top losers.

The BSE FMCG Index closed was up 0.8% at 2,013.71.  ITC, P&G, HLL, Britannia and Colgate closed in green.

The BSE Bankex was up 0.65% at 5,307.68. Federal Bank, Centurion BoP, Canara Bank, Vijaya Bank and Union Bank moved upwards.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index gained 0.9% at 5,725.06. BPCL, Kochi Refin, HPCL, Petronet LNG and IOC rose higher.

The BSE Health Care Index gained 0.4% at 3,533.79.  Ipca Labs, Cadila Health, Nicholas Pirama, Ranbaxy Labs and Sterling Bio  gained.

The BSE Auto Index closed flat at 4,979.63.  Exide Industries, Apollo Tyres, Escorts and MRF were among the losers.

The BSE IT Index lost 0.3% at 4,286.71. HCL Info, Mphasis BFL, Moser Baer, TCS moved downwards on the bourses.

The BSE Capital Goods Index lost 0.3% at 7,781.45.  Gammon India, Aban LoydChiles, Thermax, Bharat Elec and BEML closed lower.

The BSE Metal Index lost 2.2% at 8,221.80.  JSW Steel,  Hind Zinc, JindalStainless,  Sterlite Ind, SAIL and Tata Steel witnessed selling pressure.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 5790.28 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 26994.53 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2710.14 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 35494.95 crore.

Markets in green: Pharma, oil & gas stocks advance

The markets have shown some recovery and moved in the positive terrain. At 14:.06 pm IST, the Sensex is up 30 points at 11737 and the Nifty up 9 points at 3435.

About 1001 shares have advanced, 1395 shares declined, and 70 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Sensex are Ranbaxy Labs up 1.98%, Grasim up 1.61% and Dr Reddys Labs up 1.10%.

Top losers on the Sensex are NTPC down 1.84%, Reliance Energy down 1.38% and Reliance Comm down 1.33%

Top gainers on the Nifty are BPCL up 4.11% and HPCL up 3.42%.

Top losers on the Nifty are SAIL down 2.53%, Reliance Energy down 1.66% and Zee down 1.62%.

Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 237.00 up 0.94% from its previous close of Rs 234.80.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,124.00 up 0.65% from its previous close of Rs 1,116.70.

Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,798.80 down 0.38% from its previous close of Rs 1,805.60.

Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 184.90 up 0.16% from its previous close of Rs 184.60.

Markets languishing below the flat line

The markets are languishing below the flat line on account of selling pressure in select index pivotals. At 12.58 pm IST, the Sensex is down 17.38 points or 0.15% at 11689.47, and the Nifty down 2.90 points or 0.08% at 3422.8.

About 880 shares have advanced, 1431 shares declined, and 83 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Sensex are Ranbaxy Labs up 1.52%, HDFC up 1.09%, Dr Reddys Labs up 1.06%

Markets trading weak: Metal stocks drag

The markets have further slipped in the negative terrain as some profit booking is seen at the higher level. The Asian cues are trading mixed and Indian markets are underperforming the Asian markets. At 12.01 pm IST, the Sensex is down 28.89 points or 0.25% at 11677.96, and the Nifty down 10.95 points or 0.32% at 3414.75.

About 791 shares have advanced, 1440 shares declined, and 74 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Sensex are Dr Reddys Labs up 1.17%, HDFC up 1.17% and Ranbaxy Labs up 1.11%

Top gainers on the Nifty are BPCL up 3.53% and HPCL up 3.32%.

Top losers on the Sensex are Reliance Comm down 1.94%; NTPC down 1.84% and Tata Steel down 1.74%

Top losers on the Nifty are SAIL down 1.75% and Reliance Energy down 1.65%.

The markets are trading flat due to lack of buying interest in scrips. At 10.55 am IST, the Sensex is up 3.43 points or 0.03% at 11710.28, and the Nifty up 0.45 points or 0.01% at 3426.15.

About 921 shares have advanced, 962 shares declined, and 70 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Sensex are Ranbaxy Labs up 1.58%, HDFC up 1.54% and Dr Reddys Labs up 1.45%.

Top gainers on the Nifty are HPCL up 2.95% and BPCL up 2.58%.

Top losers on the Sensex are NTPC down 1.53%, Tata Steel down 1.02% and Cipla down 0.95%.

Top losers on the Nifty are Tata Steel down 1.32%, GAIL down 0.85% and ITC down 0.84%.

Markets open on a positive note

The markets have opened on positive note. At 9:57 am, the Sensex was up 41 points at 11747. The Nifty was up 10 points at 3436.

Tata Motors, L&T, HLL, Ranbaxy, Hindalco, Bajaj Auto, Maruti, Wipro, ICICI Bank, Hero Honda, Dr Reddy's, HPCL, BPCL and SAIL were major gainers on the bourses.

Asian markets were trading mixed; Japan's Nikkei was down 33.26 points or 0.21% at 15,857.3.

FIIs were net buyers of USD 9.30 million and MFs net sellers of Rs 10.8 crore (Rs 108 million) in equity on August 28.

Wall Street advanced on release of Federal Reserve minutes; the Dow Jones industrial average ended up 17.93 points, or 0.16%, to 11,369.94.

The sweet crude fell 90 cents to USD 69.71 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
