The markets ended the day on a flat note but were off day's low. Buying support came from FMCG, enegy and realty stocks. Selling pressure was seen in IT pivotals followed by select metal and banking stocks. Smallcap and midcap indices outperformed the benchmark indices. BSE Midcap index was up 0.6% and the Smallcap index was up 1%. RIL has acquired polyester assets of Malaysia-based Hualon. The stocks has reacted positively and in one of the most active counter today. Reliance was trading at Rs 1,986.00 up 1.25%. ITC, NTPC, Ambuja Cements, Reliance Petro and BPCL were among the top gainers on the indices. Sensex was up 6.41 points or 0.04% at 15596.83, and the Nifty down 1.65 points or 0.04% at 4507.85. About 1779 shares have advanced, 1175 shares declined, and 67 shares are unchanged. The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,884.39 up 33 points or 0.48%. The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 8,514.37 up 81 points or 0.96%. The BSE Bankex was up 0.06% at 8,100.37. Kotak Mahindra, Andhra Bank, SBI, Bank of Baroda, Oriental Bank moved upwards. The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.3% at 13,654.29. Bharat Bijlee, Jyoti Structure, Alstom Projects, Triveni Engg, Bharat Elec, ABB closed higher. The BSE Health Care Index was up 0.4% at 3,720.81. Orchid Chemical, Glenmark, Sterling Bio, Ranbaxy Labs closed higher. The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,900.37 up 0.22%. TVS Motor, Escorts, Apollo Tyres, Hind Motors surged. The BSE Metal Index closed flat at 11,606.05. SAIL, Sesa Goa, NALCO, Jindal Steel, JindalStainless advanced higher. The BSE IT Index lost 1.9% at 4,967.35. HCL Tech, Mphasis, Wipro, TCS, Infosys lower. BSE Oil and Gas Index closed gained 1% to close at 8,259.93. Reliance Petro, Petronet LNG, BPCL, HPCL ended in green. The BSE FMCG Index ended at 1,620.85 up 2%. ITC, United Spirits, Tata Tea, Godrej Consumer ended higher. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8894.52 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 37333.48 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4059.17 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 50287.17 crore. Markets lacklustre: ITC, NTPC top gainers The markets are lacklustre and continue to trade flat due to lack of buying interest in index pivotals. Select FMCG, capital goods and power stocks are providing support at the lower levels. IT index is down over 1.5% and bankex is down 0.6%. While FMCG index is up nearly up 1.5%. At 2.20 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 11.32 points or 0.07% at 15579.10, and the Nifty down 7.05 points or 0.16% at 4502.45. About 1757 shares have advanced, 1192 shares declined, and 72 shares are unchanged. Smallcap and midcap indices have outperformed the benchmark indices. Top losers on the Sensex are ONGC at Rs 831 down 2.32%, Satyam at Rs 441.60 down 1.81% and Wipro at Rs 469.90 down 1.78%. Market trades flat: Banking, IT stocks drag The markets are trading flat on account of some selling pressure seen in IT and banking stocks. Markets choppy: BSE smallcap outperform The markets have pulled back smartly from its early lows today on the back od buying seen in the FMCG, consumer durables, capital goods and oil & gas stocks. Its trading little choppy now but still in red. At 11.45 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 34.49 points or 0.22% at 15555.93, and the Nifty down 12.90 points or 0.29% at 4496.60. About 1686 shares have advanced, 1245 shares declined, and 89 shares are unchanged. Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 212.50 down 0.68% from its previous close of Rs 213.95. Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,984.00 up 1.15% from its previous close of Rs 1,961.40. Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,881.00 down 1.46% from its previous close of Rs 1,908.85. Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 183.50 up 3.18% from its previous close of Rs 177.85. Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 236.00 up 1.22% from its previous close of Rs 233.15. Mkts off early lows; IT, bank, metal stocks weak The markets have come off its opening lows on the back of some buying seen in FMCG and capital goods space. However, all the BSE indices are in red led by IT and banking sectors. At 11.02 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 77.94 points or 0.50% at 15512.48, and the Nifty down 22.65 points or 0.50% at 4486.85. About 1593 shares have advanced, 1342 shares declined, and 85 shares are unchanged. Top gainers on the Sensex are Ambuja Cements at Rs 141.25 up 0.86%, NTPC at Rs 188.60 up 0.77% and Ranbaxy Labs at Rs 412.85 up 0.72%. Top losers on the Sensex are ONGC at Rs 834.90 down 1.86%, Tata Motors at Rs 687.05 down 1.36% and Reliance Comm at Rs 537.30 down 1.29%. Most active shares on BSE are Aptech at Rs 372.35 with 457,693 shares, Flat Products at Rs 400 with 406,825 shares and IFCI at Rs 70.95 with 1,516,548 shares. Major losers in the IT sectors were HCL Tech at 302.90 down 2.29, Satyam at 443.45 down 1.40% and TCS at 1,063.15 down 1.31%. BSE Bankex was down 1.02% at 8013.3. Major losers in the sectors were Yes Bank at 185 down 1.44%, Andhra Bank at 90.35 down 1.42% and ICICI Bank at 919 down 1.31. Markets open in deep red on weak global cues The markets opened in deep red on the back of weak cues from the global markets. Heavy selling was seen in the opening trade across the sectors. Market breadth was negative. At 9:56 am, Sensex was down 226 points at 15363 and Nifty was down 56 points at 4453. Major losers in the opening trade were Rel Comm, Reliance, L&T, HDFC Bank, TCS, SBI, Infosys and ONGC.. Asian markets were trading weak. Japanese stocks fell sharply today, reacting to a sell-off on Wall Street in the previous session and a stronger yen, with exporters such as Sony Corp. and financials such as Mizuho Financial Group leading the decline. Japan's Nikkei plunged 2.11% or 340.49 points at 15,781.67, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.54% or 370.12 points at 23,612.49, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted declined 0.92% or 83.02 points at 8,935.06, Singapore's Straits Times was down 2.11% or 73.60 points at 3,415.37 and South Korea's Seoul Composite slipped 2.91% or 54.83 points at 1,830.07.
