Gorakhpur tragedy repeats itself, 69 children dead in 4 days at BRD Medical College

After the death of over 60 children at Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College that shook the nation two months back, the hospital has again recorded deaths of 69 children over just four days.

In the tragic episode, 19 children died on October 10, 18 on October 9, 20 on October 8, and 12 children on October 7, showed the hospital records, as per a report in the Indian Express.

Most of the deaths have been either neonatal, which is death of newborns, or caused by Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), medical college principal PK Singh told the Express.

This follows the deadly August row when a total of 290 children lost their lives in the hospital. In one incident 60 children had died allegedly owing to the lack of oxygen.

After the allegation of children dying due to disruption in oxygen supply because the hospital had not paid its bills to the vendor, an FIR was lodged and investigation was held. The vendor was arrested in September.

The repeated death of infants in the state-run medical college has put the Yogi Adityanath-led UP government under fire.

The toll in January was 152, in February it was 122, in March 159, in April 123, May 139, June 137, July 128 and the deaths were attributed to various reasons.
