New Delhi: Women beware! The old lipstick or the forgotten mascara in your handbag is a health hazard.
"Any kind of make-up is bad and old cosmetics could cause bacterial fungal infections that could lead to allergies," says Dr Rajiv Sekhri, a dermatologist at the Fortis Hospital in Delhi.
Over time and through exposure to air the make-up you're slathering on your face becomes a hotbed of moisture-loving bacteria and fungi. Old make-up put your eyes at risk.
"Eyes are more sensitive than the rest of the face as the insides of your eyes are more exposed. So old eye make up can cause various kinds of infections," says Dr Ritu Arora, eye specialist in Max Hospital.
If your mascara has dry clumps, if your kajal or eye shadow has started to crumble or if your lipsticks have oil droplets on them, it is probably a good idea to buy new make up.
Here are some safe cosmetic tips:
Store make up in a cool and dry place
Change make up every 6 months and eye make up every 3 months
Clean eye pencils with tissue before applying
Wear contact lenses first and then apply make up
Don't share make-up and make-up brushes
Keep your make-up covered at all times
Use tubed cosmetic products, as the contact with air is minimal.
