Kolkata city will host a gala music extravaganza, in the line of the renowned Woodstock festival of the USA, where leading musicians from the world over will participate from February next year.
Celebrated percussionist Tanmoy Bose, who organised a concert 'Kolkata Fusion Fiesta' with international stars in the first week of this month, said its next editions would be "our own Woodstock, younger in age but richer in content." Held at the town of Bethel, New York, where leaders in different genres of music take part, the three-day Woodstock festival is also famous for its very large number of audience.
"Musical stalwarts like Sivamani, Trilok Gurtu, Prem Joshua, Russian bands like Otava Yo took part in the three-day Fusion Fiesta. They had never been to Kolkata together, they had never interacted with the audience this way. "There will be participation of various genres of music. I hope Kolkata will turn out in thousands for the next year's edition," said Bose, before wrapping up the Kolkata Fusion Fiesta aimed at promoting peace, safety of women and art, held in assistance with the American Center. Bose's Taaltantra band enthralled audiences in the Mid-East, North America and Europe, presented in Fusion Fiesta pieces of Jazz, Indian Classical Music, Folk Music and indigenous drumming in a unique synthesis in tribute to women who are abused in the country and the rest of the world.
"We have already begun preparations to make it bigger in terms of attendance, scale and musical variety on offer," the percussionist said. Grammy winner Trilok Gurtu said he would love to attend the Woodstock Kolkata version next year. "I find something uniquely quirky about Kolkata which makes me curious about this city. I need to come over again and again for exploring this place," said the Germany-based instrumentalist.
