Unified licences to new operators in 2-3 mths: Telecom secy

The government will issue Unified Licences to new telecom operators in two to three months time, telecom secretary R Chandrashekhar said today.

The government will issue unified licences to new telecom operators in two to three months time, telecom secretary R Chandrashekhar said today.

"It will take around two to three months time for unified licences framework to be worked out," Chandrashekhar told PTI. He added that companies winning spectrum in the proposed auction will require unified licence and details will be worked before that.

The new licences will be different from present telecom licences issued to companies that limits the number or kind of services they can provide. For unified licence framework, TRAI had recommended that there shall be three levels, namely national level, service area level and district level and these licences will be de-linked from spectrum which has been approved by cabinet today.

Trai recommended one time non-refundable entry fee for unified licence shall be Rs 15 crore for national level, Rs 1 crore for each service area level unified licences, except for Jammu and Kashmir and North East service areas where entry fee will be Rs 50 lakh each. For each district level unified licence, the regulator has requested non-refundable entry fee of Rs 10 lakh.

As per NTP 2012, DoT will have to put in place web based system for submission of applications including processing, issuance of licences and clearances from the department.
