Q: I know that you spent a lot of time in focusing and studying on all kinds of things including diseases that are going around in the world and I am dying to ask you a question - would you have your kids get the H1N1 vaccination? Gates: Sure. As that becomes available, I think everybody should have it. Q: There are concerns from a lot of parents - it's a brand new thing but it's the same sort of vaccination process that we have used for over 60 years? Gates: This one doesn't pose any particular new risks. All medical things have a small degree of risk in them, but the benefit is quite strong. Q: Do you worry about the H1N1 flu and I say this is somebody who has spent a lot of time worrying about it and I am hoping you can make me feel a little better or do I need to think back to 1918? Gates: We are very lucky that the number of people who get very sick or who die from this is quite small as a percentage. We could have had a pandemic that was much worse. And so I hope this time we learn how to make vaccines faster and think about how we get them out around the world. We really did get lucky that this isn't more of a problem. Q: Have we completely dodged the bullet? Gates: There are some people who are getting sick and there are even some people dying. But the percentage is not anything like 1918 or even 1956 or 1967. Q: So it's not something that's necessarily near the top of your list of concerns? Gates: At this point the chance of it becoming more virulent is quite remote. Continued on next page...
