Monsoon strengthens further, crops to gain

The vital monsoon rains were 38% higher than normal in the week to July 28, bouncing back from a 17% deficit in the previous week, the weather office said on Thursday.
Weekly rainfall was the highest in the current June-September season and much heavier than any week in the 2009 monsoon period, which delivered the lowest rainfall since 1972 and triggered a sustained rise in food prices.
Heavy, well-distributed showers in the past week helped total rainfall rise to normal during July, the most important month for planting rice, corn, soybean and cane.
The policymakers hope good monsoon rains will help rein in soaring inflation, which has stood in double digits for five consecutive months.
The opposition has stalled proceedings in parliament for the third straight day on the issue of price rise, attacking the federal government on an issue that has emerged as a major policy challenge.
