Women's bill: Kiran Mazumdar Shaw calls for fair statusPublished on Mon, Mar 08, 2010 at 21:07 | Source : CNBC-TV18 Updated at Tue, Mar 09, 2010 at 11:01
In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CEO, Biocon , gave her perspective on the women's reservation bill. Q: What is your view on the women's reservation that is in parliament today? Is reservation the right way forward to mandate gender equality? A: Yes I completely subscribe to the women's reservation bill. In general I am opposed to reservation but I think I have to make an exception in this case because I think women have not enjoyed equal status and I think this is a very important bill because I think it is all about representation of women and giving women a fair status in society. So the equitable status and stature that women need in our society is long needed. Q: Some sections of our polity believe that political reservation is not the right approach for empowering women. Would you agree? A: The first thing is that this bill has been around for 14 years. We still haven't been able to articulate the nuances of this bill. We have not been able to share what we want out of this bill. I am very surprised that there is no political buy into this bill after all these years which means that the political parties or the ruling political parties have just not done justice to this bill. I cannot believe that people do not see the merit of this bill and what it stands for after all these years. So I think the government should be in a much better state of preparedness in making sure that this bill is implemented.
