Veteran actor AK Hangal dead at 95

One of Bollywood's most well-known character actors, A.K. Hangal died Sunday morning, Indian media reported.

Veteran actor AK Hangal dead at 95
One of Bollywood's most well-known character actors, A.K. Hangal died Sunday morning, Indian media reported.


Hangal, who was 95 and is survived by his son Vijay, was on life-support at a hospital in suburban Mumbai, but was taken off after doctors said there wasn't much chance of a recovery, his son Vijay was quoted as saying.


Known as the grand old man of Indian cinema, Hangal acted in a whole range of films and TV series from the 1960's to 2012. He was most recently part of a television series on actor Madhubala.


His roles in films like "Sholay", "Namak haraam" and several others are remembered by audiences of all ages.


"An era comes to an end. Theatre and film were enriched by him," actor Shabana Azmi said on Twitter.
