To ensure ease of doing business in India, there is a need to do process re-engineering of the government in many ways and also improve social indices on education and health, Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said today.

"The government has taken many initiatives to ensure ease of doing business. From reducing the paper works to scarping of nearly 1,587 redundant Acts. Today we need to do process re-engineering of the government in many ways," he said at an event organised by Indian Merchants' Chamber here.

Kant said if the country has to achieve 9-10 per cent GDP growth every year, there was a need to improve our social indices.

"Education and health are key factors especially when we are facing the challenge of demographic population which is getting younger and which needs to provide jobs. Though we are providing education, but emphasis should be on its quality," he added.

The Niti Aayog CEO said the government has already started the initiative of ranking states on various parameters for ease of doing business.

"We have put out a portal where states are competing on 334 parameters, compared to a 100 last year. The only way to make India improve is to make them compete, and the worst performing states are named and shamed. We want to take a step further in this endeavour and we would now want to rank them also on learning outcomes and health outcomes," Kant added.

"Every minute 30 Indians are moving to the city. When India urbanises, land, gas and water will be scarce commodities... therefore India needs to have an innovative sustainable path of growth," the CEO added.

He also said gender parity was a critical factor in achieving the desired growth.

"Another crucial factor for India's entrepreneurial development is women's entrepreneurship. Currently, it accounts for 17 percent of India's GDP, and women account for just 24 percent of total number of workers. Globally women account for 40 percent GDP. Therefore, gender parity is crucial, and is a key driver for growth," he stressed.

Kant further said the government has taken many initiatives for infrastructure development.

"We are seeing a lot of activity in roads, airports, ports. Currently, it is happening through public funding but this will not be sustainable for a longer period. There is a need for private sector to contribute in a large way for sustainable growth," he said, adding there was a need to embrace technology to leapfrog to the desired goals.
