Mumbai: Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and various parts of Maharashtra on Tuesday morning throwing normal life out of gear, disrupting rail, road and air traffic and forcing schools to announce a holiday.

Mumbai is limping back to normalcy after heavy rains threw life out of gear in the morning.  The rains have stopped and water has started receding from the water-logged areas. The BMC used over 200 pumps to pump out rainwater. Municipal schools were closed and private schools asked to send students home. Rail tracks were also submerged, trains and flights disrupted and Best buses diverted on some routes.

Waterlogging was reported from several low-lying areas of the city and areas like Dadar TT, Hindmata, Milan Subway, Andheri subway, Mahim Church Junction and Chembur were worst hit.

Central railway services were suspended as tracks at several places were reportedly submerged. Western Railway services were also delayed by 15 to 20 minutes due to poor visibility.

However, no rescheduling was reported on long distance trains running in the afternoon. While no inbound and outbound flights were cancelled at the time of reporting, delays by over one hour were reported.

Road traffic blockades were reported from at least 12 places in Mumbai but BEST buses running were reported running on all routes with some diversions.

BMC schools have been shut for the day.

This is the second spell that the city has received this season. Last year too, the city and its suburbs got paralysed due to incessant rains.
