It has been a whole generation since America put a man on the moon and it is anybody's guess when another human will get there. Well Google is doing its part in continuing the lunar odyssey reports CNBC's Jane Wells.

Google is sponsoring the "Lunar X Prize" USD 20 million to the first private team that can launch, land and move a rover on the moon by 2012. Several teams have entered in the race so far including one from Carnegie Mellon University and one based in the Isle of Man called Odyssey Moon.

Getting to the moon will probably cost USD 12-15 million and Team FREDNET hopes to find sponsors. Technologically landing intact will be the tough part but on the team is former NASA lunar lander engineer.

Still there is an air of hope and confidence that someone will win that prize and open up all kinds of new business opportunities. Though for many it is really not about the money.
