All-India rain deficit plumped to a new low of three per cent as on Friday (September 5) around the same time as a fresh band of unsettled weather draped the south peninsula.
Very heavy to heavy rains have been reported from Kerala, interior Karnataka and Marathawada variously over the past two days. This wave is projected to inch northwards, powered by two weather systems on either side of the peninsula.
A special update by India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said that widespread to fairly widespread rainfall occurred over Kerala and Lakshadweep during the week. Interior Karnataka, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema too have reported good rainfall.
Out of the 36 meteorological sub-divisions, those recording deficient rainfall was seven; and some of them had improved their relative position week-on-week.
