Sources have told CNBC-TV18 that Mazda Motor has indeed carried out market research in the last 12 months to sort of judge the market potential for three of its models. Mazda Motor, which is famous for its sport cars and compact cars, has carried out this research online through social networking sites and blogs.

When contacted Mazda Motor Corporation told CNBC-TV18, "The company is carefully considering all possibilities related to emerging markets, and nothing has been decided at this time."

If we consider Mazda cars coming into India, they would probably starting from price range of around Rs 12-13 lakh going upwards, which would be in the same segment as where Honda and Toyota already exist.

Mazda had a technical partnership with Punjab Tractors which was Swaraj Mazda but they exited this partnership in 2005. The company reported a loss of USD 770 million last year. Ford has a partial stake in the company.
