Spurred by the spike in sales of diesel vehicles, Maruti Suzuki 's Swift became the country's second most sold car, tipping Wagon-R for the first time. There was a change in the pecking order in the Hyundai's camp as well, with i20 outselling i10 in the April- December period. There is a churn in the SUV space with Maruti Ertiga piping Scorpio to the number two slot, reports CNBC-TV18's Ronojoy Banerjee.

So, it is official now! 2012 will indeed go down as the year for diesel powered vehicles. The pecking order of the five most popular models has seen a churn. According to data compiled by industry for the period April to December, Maruti Suzuki's Swift was the second most sold car in the nine month period at 1.26 lakh units. It was a jump of 35 percent from the corresponding period last year.

This is no mean achievement, considering that Maruti had to stop production of the Swift for a whole month between July and August, due to the Manesar shut down. The other big surprise entrant into the exclusive club of five was Maruti's Dzire. It catapulted to the number three position. That was with a jump in sales of over 60 percent to 1.14 lakh units.Meanwhile Hyundai's i20 broke into the top five by outselling its more popular sibling i10. During the April-December period i20 sold 68,152 units.

While Maruti's Alto continued to enjoy the tag of the country's favourite car, maintaing the number one position with sales of 1.85 lakh units. It was however 10 percent lower than the two lakh plus units it sold in the corresponding period last year.

The exclusion from the top 5 was Tata Motors owned Indica. It sold 61,330 units in the April-December period, lower by 15 percent as compared to a year ago period. Hyundai's i10 also missed out in the top five.

The SUV and MUV segment also saw a churn. However, M&M's Bolero maintained its leadership position with sales of 72, 531 units, in the nine month period and a jump of 15 percent.

It was Maruti's Ertiga that displaced Scorpio from the number two position, with sales of 58,350 units. Toyota's Innova secured the number three position in the race with sales of 56,081 units. It saw a jump of nearly 50 percent.
