Videocon, STel join 3G race; Uninor keeps at bay
CNBC-TV18 now learns that Videocon too may bid for the 3G licence. Uninor has opted to stay out of the race. The company has said that there would be many more opportunities later for 3G services. “We are yet to get 2G Spectrum in all circles.”
Telecoms majors including Bharti Airtel , Reliance Communication and Vodafone Essar have confirmed that they would vie for third-generation (3G) Indian mobile spectrum in an April auction, as they clamour for capacity for new services. Idea Cellular , STel (a joint venture between the Sivasankaran group and Bahrain Telecom) and Etisalat too are learnt to be in the 3G licence fray.

CNBC-TV18 now learns that Videocon too may bid for the licence. However, Uninor has opted to stay out of the race. The company has said that there would be many more opportunities later for 3G services. "We are yet to get 2G spectrum in all circles," a company official said.
In a latest development, it has been learnt that Reliance Communication as bid for broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum as well.
Also, sources inform CNBC-TV18 that the government has replaced the second nominee on the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) board-Joint Secretary of the Department of Telecommunication, JS Deepak will no longer to be on the MTNL and BSNL board. It has also been learnt that JS Deepak will be the key official handling 3G auction.
The next-generation technologies would allow high-speed Internet access and data transfer on mobile phones and boost usage of data services, where margins are higher. More spectrum would also improve the quality of voice services.
