The Cabinet today approved a legislation allowing the setting up of foreign universities in India. The bill will now be presented in Parliament shortly.

Sources say approval for up to 200 foreign universities is pending. The universities include Yale, Harvard, Oxford, and Columbia University.

The process will take eight months to complete. The Human Resource Development Ministry will decide on the roadmap within this month.

Up to 20 universities are likely to be given clearance in the first round. Entry is likely to be through tie-ups with premier Indian institutions.

The entry of foreign universities is also possible through tie-up's with Indian companies. Companies like Reliance Industries, AB Nuvo, and the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group have been eyeing the education space.
