The Department of Telecom (DoT) has ordered S Tel to stop voice and data services in three circles, sources told CNBC-TV18's Siddharth Zarabi. The order covers Bihar, Orissa, and Himachal Pradesh circles and is based on security concerns.

S Tel, a joint venture between the Siva Group and Bahrain Telecom, is mobile operator with licenses in seven circles.

Commenting on the same, P Swaminathan, President, Siva Group, says the company has recieved the letter on stopping service from DoT a few hours back. "We are very surprised by this order as we had received DoT's permission to start services on December 11 and 21, 2009, and are trying to ascertain the reason for this action."

According to him, the order mentions national security as the ground for action. "No explanation or details provided." Swaminathan says the company will address any concerns that may exist.
