UID official meets RBI, bankers to update on micro banking

The unique identity authority has met with top bankers and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) officials to update them of the progress in the project's rollout.

The unique identity authority has met with top bankers and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) officials to update them of the progress in the project's rollout. Sources say bankers have been informed that the opening of bank account for unbanked individuals and the issue of UID numbers can happen simultaneously, reports CNBC-TV18’s Gopika Gopakumar.


UID sources say they have updated banks on Aadhar plan and also showed how micro ATMs can be established via prevailing national payment system. It has also briefed how multiple vendors are possible for micro ATMs.


RBI’s plan is to reach bank access to all villages of ovrr 2000 people by 2012. For this purpose, 72,000 villages identified and allocated to banks already. The financial inclusion plan can now be pursued in conjunction with Aadhar/UID number and mobile banking and bank correspondent will abet the process.


Bankers say that they will get Rs 50 for creating a UID number.  UID has currently tied up with 12 PSU banks as registrars and is looking to include private sector banks as registrars.
