Japanese auto maker Suzuki is strengthening its position in the Indian two-wheeler market. It is ramping up production and three new bikes are in the pipeline. CNBC-TV18’s Saqib Malik and Nayantara Rai report. With the launch of its big bikes the GSX-R1000 and bandit 1250s—Suzuki is ramping up its presence in the Indian market for bikes. The 1000cc GSX-r1000 is Suzuki's costliest bike in the segment at Rs 12,75,000 and given market needs, the company has opened its first exclusive big bike workshop in Delhi. With this Suzuki says it now has a pan-India presence in the after-sale service market for its big bikes. Currently, Suzuki sells around 400 super bikes annually, but it hopes that sales will pick up 600-700 bikes annually a couple of years from now. Atul Gupta, Vice President-Sales and Marketing, Suzuki Motorcycles India, said, “Suzuki is aiming to double production capacity of its two-wheelers to meet the growing consumer demand. While the company manufactured 200,000 bikes between 2007 and 2010, it is planning to roll out 400,000 bikes by 2012.” Overall, Suzuki is targeting sales of a million bikes across segments by 2016, a feat that would make it one of the leading two-wheeler firms in India.
