On the Cabinet agenda today is the National Telecom Policy, reports CNBC-TV18’s Malvika Jain. The new policy aims to restore growth in the ailing sector and is based on TRAI's recommendations made between May 2010 to April 2011.
The policy has 36 key objectives, which include delinking license from spectrum allocation and giving telecom an infrastructure status. It will also discuss the provision in the policy which states that there should be no roaming fee, but we are yet to receive TRAI’s recommendations on that. So that is something that the government has not considered so far, but is part of the policy document. This policy also aims to provide sharing of spectrum, but trading of spectrum has not been provided so far. After Kapil Sibal took over as Telecom Minster, he had announced that there will be a new telecom policy aimed at alleviating the distress in the telecom space. This policy aims to provide a level playing field for all the players. Cabinet sources suggest that this policy is likely to be approved, but of course going by recent trends we cannot be sure and we will have to wait and watch for the meeting to actually take place.
