The mining industry in Karnataka can breathe a sigh of relief. The Supreme Court has accepted the recommendations of the Central-empowered committee on resuming operations in category 'A' mines, reports Vineetha Athrey of CNBC-TV18.
Today’s hearing comes as a sigh of relief for several mining companies. During the April 13 hearing, several mining companies had appealed to the Supreme Court asking for its permission to kick start the preparatory work towards the resumption of mining operations in the state. The Supreme Court had in turn directed CEC to examine the matter. The Supreme Court today gave a go ahead to about 20, category ‘A’ mines to kick start the process. Miners are all set to start the mining operations in about a month’s time subject to CECs nod. Category A mines, are those mines, which have no allegations of irregularites against them. The Supreme Court has also directed sale of iron ore that has been lying in the stockyards through the e-auction route. Nearly, five lakh tonne of illegally mined iron ore was confiscated. Now, with the existing iron ore stocks dwindling in the state adding to the dismay of steel companies, this again comes as a matter of huge relief. In addition to this the CEC has also recommended CBI probe against Yeddyurappa as well as JSW Steel in relation with the case and this matter will be heard in the next week.
