JR Varma to head Sebi advisory committee?

The Secondary Market Advisory Committee (SMAC) set up by the market regulator, SEBI, is set to be revamped. Sources told CNBC-TV18 the committee will now be headed by former Sebi board member JR Varma. UK Sinha, who is the Chairman of UTI Mutual Fund, is also going to be inducted in this committee.

Sources say Sebi's SMAC that looks after developments related to the secondary market and recommends policy framework changes is all set to be revamped. Former Sebi board director JR Varma is likely to head the committee. Varma is currently the dean and a professor at IIM Ahmedabad.

UK Sinha, UTI Mutual Fund Chairman, is also going to be inducted in this committee, it is learnt. Sinha has been a part of the Ministry of Finance's policy decision at various levels. This committee is currently headed by Professor PG Apte, the former director of IIM Bangalore.

The other members of the committee are Madhu Kannan, MD and CEO of BSE; Ravi Narain MD and CEO of NSE; and Gagan Rai, MD and CEO of NSDL.
