Tata Motors -owned Jaguar Cars seems to have got a thumbs down from customers, as far as quality is concerned. CNBC-TV18 reports that in the latest JD Power and Associates' Initial Quality Study, Jaguar ranked a poor 29th, down from the 8th rank it held earlier.

The XF is currently considered the most promising car model in Jaguar's stable. But it is this same model that has pulled down Jaguar's ranking in the annual Initial Quality Study conducted by global marketing information services firm JD Power and Associates.

Jaguar has come in at 29th place this year, in a list of 37 manufacturers. Last year, the carmaker was ranked 8th. This year, Jaguar scored 134 points in the study, that's 134 problems per 100 vehicles-much lower than the industry average of 108.

In its defence, Jaguar says, "90% of the score is from one model's launch, the XF, in which some minor launch glitches/issues impacting the score have since been resolved. These include the glove box operation and the fuel filler flap."

It adds, "The small sample sizes in this year's Initial Quality Study (IQS) have created an unusual result, as it has minimised the incredibly strong performance of Jaguar's XK sports car and XJ sedan, which are among the highest-scoring IQS vehicles in their segments."

This latest performance by Jaguar is also in sharp contrast to its performance in JD Power's Vehicle Dependability Study conducted earlier this year-a study it topped. JD Power says that in its study, it polled over 80,900 respondents, covering all new 2009 model-year cars, trucks and multi-activity vehicles.

Analysts say that these latest results may erode some of the goodwill the brand won after the earlier study. Jaguar, meanwhile, may want its customers to go by its strong history, as it tries to build its business and woo new customers in India.
