The year has begun on a great note for autos. The sales numbers for January have been robust across the industry for major players. Maruti has surpassed estimates, while M&M 's tractor sales drag along. Swati Khandelwal Jain of CNBC-TV18 does a report with all the numbers.

It's been quite a interesting day for Maruti , the new Dzire has been launched and also exciting numbers have come in after months of having a rough ride. Maruti registered a sales growth of 25% compared on a month-on-month basis.

The overall industry has actually bounced back from the lows of 2011 and importantly, last January, things were pretty good and the numbers were quite healthy for most of them. It was only post January that the automakers started to see this slowdown. So, on the basis of that, the numbers look quite healthy because it was a strong base that they are being compared with. Maruti Suzuki, on a year on year basis also, they are up almost 5% and they have crossed the 1 lakh unit sales mark after a long time. So at 1.15 lakh units this time around they are up 5% on a year-on-year basis.

The major push has come in from exports for Maruti. Exports have contributed to almost 54% of overall growth and exports have crossed 14000 units for Maruti Suzuki. Domestic sales however were at around 1 lakh units which was the case even last year.

Talking about Tata Motors , again very healthy set of numbers after a long time. They have recorded the highest ever passenger vehicle sales for the company this time with 16% growth in total sales and they have come in at a healthy 87000 odd units. Even their exports have been quite robust, up almost 43% at about 7000 units. Commercial vehicles were up 14% as expected, so good going there, and Nano sales specifically were at 7000 odd units. That is almost 14-15% higher, but again, it is still not at the levels where the company was expecting it to be- at around 10000 units. Going forward, they are hopeful it will grow.

Mahindra & Mahindra, posted good numbers overall, but tractor sales slipped and they were down about 7.6%.

TVS did a quite good 1.7 lakh units, and Hero Moto Corp was at 5.2 lakh versus 4.66 lakh units previous quarter.
