Govt lists GST bill in Parliament's winter session to-do

Even though Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has indicated that the April 2010 target for introducing the goods and services tax (GST) may not be met, CNBC-TV18 has learnt that a crucial Constitution amendment for rolling out GST has been listed for the business of the Parliament’s winter session. CNBC-TV18’s Siddharth Zarabi reports.

The upcoming Parliamentary session mentions the introduction of a Constitutional amendment bill for GST. A bill for amendment is crucial and would be required to transfer some of the Centre’s power of levying taxes to states, which the GST proposes to do.

However, the development in itself is not indicative whether the GST deadline will be met.

Sources say a meeting between the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) will take place on November 10 in New Delhi where the draft white paper, which has already been finalized by a working group will be discussed. The empowered committee may or may not choose to release that draft GST paper for public consultation.
