The Supreme Court's 2G licence cancellation verdict has thrown up another googly. The Department of Telecom or the DoT is not sure if it should cancel the CDMA spectrum allotted to companies. CNBC-TV18's Malvika Jain reports.
The Supreme Court this morning cancelled 122 telecom licenses issued by A Raja in 2008, a decision that will trigger powerful changes in the telecom sector, and eventually in how much India pays for cell-phone services.
Sistema Shyam is the only CDMA company, which was allotted spectrum after January 2008. It was allotted 4 Mhz in 21 circles. Sources say the DoT is not clear if the CDMA spectrum should be auctioned. There is no shortage of CDMA spectrum per se, so the case if different from other GSM telcos.
Sistema Shyam was allotted original license in the mid-90s.
Sistema, which acquired Shyam Telelink in 2007, began free voice and SMS within its network today.
