Prices of computers, laptops, and even accessories, may go up soon. CNBC-TV18 learns that hardware manufacturers may move to hike prices by 4-7% across product portfolios by the end of April. Experts say this move may come as manufacturers worry that the 200 basis point hike in the excise duty on these products to 12% may hurt volumes.
Diptarup Chakraborti, Principal Research Analyst, Gartner, said, "Hardware vendors basically fear an impact on their topline. It's more of a long-term impact and to cushion that vendors have to ensure that they hike prices across segments. From the initial feelers we think that a price hike is inevitable approximately by May."
The price hike is likely to be implemented by all manufacturers-from Dell to Lenovo to Acer to Asus to even Indian players like HCL Technologies and Wipro .
CNBC-TV18 learns that desktops and laptops may become costlier by 5%, netbooks may become costlier by 6%, and prices of computer peripherals may rise by 7%. Even networking devices like routers are likely to see prices rise by up to 10%.
Analysts add that while the price hikes may not hurt demand for desktops and laptops, demand for routers and computer peripherals may take a significant hit over the next quarter.
