The Cabinet has deferred the decision on the Land Acquisition Bill which was included at the last minute in the agenda. The Cabinet had a chance to meet a demand that industry has been seeking for quite some time now. The stance of the Bill regarding land acquisition for PPP has also been diluted,  reports CNBC-TV18's Rituparna Bhuyan, quoting sources.

Sources indicate that some Cabinet members wanted more time to go over the provisions of the Bill and hence the decision to defer the passing of the Bill was taken. Sources have also said that the Bill has a few loopholes that need to be plugged.

One is regarding the ministry of rural development’s plan to allow some relaxation to national investment and manufacturing zones and projects inside the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor which has been a long-standing demand of the commerce and industry ministry.

Commerce minister Anand Sharma had assured the industry in a recent meeting that if the Land Acquisition Bill contained no relaxation in rules, he would oppose the Bill tooth-and-nail in the Cabinet meeting.

So, over the next few of weeks, the draft bill might be revised and amended to coincide with the next Cabinet meeting when the Bill will be taken up for discussion.
