Nifty@5500: Stocks that helped it get there

Moneycontrol Bureau

Indian equities have been on a roll through 2012 boosted by ample liquidity conditions, lower inflation and falling interest rates in emerging markets. The Nifty today surged past key psycological level of 5500 for the first time since August 2011, and the Sensex also breached the 18,000 mark.

However, most investors and analysts -- cautious in anticipation of downgrades -- have been caught off guard by the one-way upmove. No one had expected to see the kind of foreign inflows that we have seen so far -- over USD 2 billion at last count.

The NSE 50-share benchmark Nifty is up nearly 19% since start of the year. During this period, the beaten down CNX Realty index rose 45%, while the CNX Metal index is up 38%.

Anil Ambani-led Reliance Infra comes out as the star performer on the Nifty with gains of 84%. Sesa Goa comes in as a distant second with gains of nearly 56%. (See table below for complete list)

Despite the exuberance seen across the market, four index heavyweights did not participate in the rally; in fact, they gave negative returns. These were Infosys, HUL, Bharti Airtel and GAIL. Cipla too posted almost flat returns for this period.

Outside the Nifty, the scene was even greener. Four non-index stocks such as IVRCL (113%), Orbit Corp (113%), Lanco Infra (103%) and (HDIL) (103%) made investors a lot of money.

Let's take a look at the top Nifty gainers:
