Dempo beats Churchill Brothers at I-League opener

Margao, Oct 6 (PTI) Defending Champions Dempo lived up to their billing as they edged past Churchill Brothers 2-1 to open their account at the I-League tie played at Nehru stadium in Fatorda today. Ryuji Sueoka put Dempo in the lead in the second minute when he slammed the ball into the net after rival keeper Sandip Nandy failed to grab the ball which was directed from the right by Clifford Miranda. Roberto Silva restored parity in the 47th minute for Churchill Brothers after they missed couple of gilt edge chances in the first half before Sueoka scored the winning goal in the 75th minute with a clinical finish. Both the teams started on attacking note with Churchill Brothers having the ball possession for better part of the first half as they probed more often but failed to find the mark. Dempo took an early lead in the 2nd minute when rival keeper Sandip Nandy failed to grab the ball off a long lob from Clifford from the left, the ball spilled from his hand and Sueoka pounced on the loose ball and slotted in. Churchill Brothers retaliated and had a glorious chance to restore parity four minutes latter but Steven Dias who had only to beat the rival keeper Subhaish Roy Chowdhury failed as he made a sliding save to put the ball out off Roberto Silva pass. Churchill made threatening moves and came close to scoring twice but keeper Chowdhury managed to put the ball out off Bilal header off a cross from Steven Dias. Churchill pressed hard and nearly scored in the dying minute of the first half but Roberto Silva shot off Leny Rodrigues pass missed the target narrowly. Churchill restored parity soon after the break when Robeto Silva cash on the rebound after Keeper Chowdhury blocked Tomba Singh shot from top of the box and shot home from close. Thereafter Dempo made two quick changes and kept on pressing into the rival half from the flank and scored the winning goal in the 75th minute. Anthony Pereira from the right send a long lob into the box which two rival defender failed to intercept and Ryuji Sueoka ran in between them and on the run shot home with a clinical finish to give Dempo full points.
