HC rejects Meenakshi Amman temple's claim on parking fee
Madurai, Jan 5 (PTI) The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has rejected the claim of Sri Meenakshi Amman temple Devasthanam here to collect parking fee for the vehicles parked in the land owned by it. Justice K.N.Basha and Justice M.Venugopal, disposing of a public interest litigation petition filed by advocate Selvakumar, said the temple being a seperate entity, managed by Trustees, could not claim exemption (to collect Parking fee) under Sec 348 of the Madurai City Municipal Corporation Act. Only the Corporation could collect fee through a licensee, the Judges said adding even a private person should obtain licence from the corporation commissioner for collecting fee. The petitioner submitted that when he along with his family and friends came in a bus to offer worship at the temple, the licensee of the corporation collected Rs 50 as parking fee while another person too demanded parking fee after directing them to move the vehicle to another location, which is owned by the temple. The Petitioner said devotees could not be asked to pay two fees for parking vehicles in the same place.
