7 cops injured during attempt to arrest accused

Raipur, Jan 20 (PTI) Seven cops were injured when over 30 people allegedly attacked a team of policemen, who had gone to arrest an accused in a six year old case in Maudahapara area here, police said today. "A team of policemen led by Maudahapara police station house officer Ramkrishna Mishra and Devendra Nagar police station house officer Umesh Mishra was attacked yesterday night when it had gone to arrest Abdul Azeem (52) in Maudahapara area," Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Lal Umed Singh said. "Arrest warrant was issued by a local court against Abdul Azeem in the riots case, dating back six years, under Devendra Nagar police station limits," he added. On seeing the police party which had gone to arrest Azeem, his son and other relatives attacked with batons on police following which seven cops were injured, Singh said. Later, eight persons including Azeem were arrested for assaulting and attacking police, he added. The other arrested were identified as Abdul Asraf (28), Abdul Wasim (27), Irfan Ali (27), Anwar Ali (41), Hafiuddin (18), Rajjan Khan (18), and Abdul Raheem (45), he said. They all were booked under Section 147 (rioting), Section 307 (attempt to murder) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the ASP said adding that efforts were on to trace other attackers who escaped.
