Wipro to defer joining of fresh recruits to next year
Wipro plans to defer joining dates of new campus recruits to the next fiscal. It will not be able to honour all the campus job offers that it has made this year. More than half of the 6,000 freshers recruited from campuses will join only post April.
Here's some not-so-good news for aspiring IT professionals. CNBC-TV18's Vineetha Athrey reports that Wipro plans to defer joining dates of new campus recruits to the next fiscal.
Wipro will not be able to honour all the campus job offers that it has made this year. More than half of the 6,000 freshers recruited from campuses will join only post April. Earlier, the IT giant had announced a hiring freeze for this year. Of their employee addition target of 14,000 for the year, only around 7,000 have been hired.
Pratik Kumar, Executive VP - HR, Brand and Corporate Communication, says, "We have 6,000 campus joinees from last year. We were hoping that we should be able to absorb them during the rest of this year. But now our estimate is that it is likely to spill over to next year. For the next year, we have made 8000 offers. By the end of next year we should be able to absorb all of them."
Wipro says that it is working on non-linear initiatives, which don't need employee additions right now. The company is focusing on "just in time" model, and will hire as and when required. But does this mean the offer-letter holders will have to sit idle at home?
Kumar says, "We will put learning modules in place so they can start learning even before joining us. So when they join us finally, the period will be truncated from the mandatory 12 weeks to much lesser."
The IT major plans to start these training modules for those holding offer letters during the course of this quarter. As to fresh hiring, Wipro says that with the market rich with resumes, there is no dearth of interested candidates whenever they need to hire.
