From a 10% share of the global mobile phone market, Motorola is now upto 22%. But it's still behind Nokia's 34%. CNBC-TV18 caught up with the company's Chairman and has this report.
Ed Zander, Chairman & CEO, Motorola, is the man who turned 75 year old Motorola around - the company that made the first commercial handset. Zander studies the competition very closely.
He says, "Things that they've done really well is that they understood what scale meant. So they have a well developed supply chain, which gives them a good cost structure. So they have a commonality of components."
Three years ago Motorola's future looked grainy, market share had been pounded and losses had touched USD 6 billion. The 75-year-old phone maker needed a shakeup. Then came Ed Zander, the Razr, Slvr, Rock, Krazr and a 10% increase in market share.
Now Motorola is talking about emerging markets, seamless mobility and a phone for every need. "There's immense pressure to keep churning out blockbuster products!" says Zander, and he's found new ways of encouraging risk taking and innovation.
This celebrity CEO won't say in how long he hopes to beat Nokia or make India an important revenue center, as those ofcourse are not his only challenges!
