Walmart brings Hope; to pump in $1.2 m in Indian education

Even as it is all set to enter India, Walmart will invest USD 1.2 million on education in India, reports CNBC-TV18.

Walmart and the Hope Foundation will set up five industrial centres of Hope. They are centres that will provide primary education to children and vocational training to adults. Walmart will contribute USD 1.12 million to set up the centres. The project, which will take three years, will come up in Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Panipat and Moradabad. The cities that have been strategically chosen, keeping in mind their close proximity to the industrial clusters from where Walmart procures bulk of its supply.


Walmart has chosen the centres so that they are close to industrial clusters, where it procures most of its supply. They hope to provide primary education for 1,000 children and train three thousand young adults in professional short-term courses.

From retail to education?

The centre will also provide computer skills and short term courses of three-to-six months, which will boost skill and enhance earning power. The education and training will be tailored to the needs of the community and local companies will help to design the curriculum.
